Taattinen Residency is a material-driven platform for exploring the possibilities of local Finnish clay. We strive to offer an inspiring space for artists, ceramicists, and designers to test the possibilities of this local material. We are all about pushing the boundaries of what is known of this material and seeking unexpected outcomes through making and experimenting.

We look for work proposals that focus on topics such as making ceramics more ecological and local, seeking new manufacturing possibilities for low-fire clay, and exploring the presence of this material in a conceptual context in our culture.

We offer one 30-day residency program yearly during Taattinen Farms’ summer season.
The residency facilitates a place for 3-5 artists.

ARTISTS

DAVIDE RONCO

Davide Ronco (IT), is a graduate of the Ceramic MA at the Royal Danish Academy and is currently undergoing a postgraduate program at Konstfack University: Research Lab Craft. He lives and works in Copenhagen. His artistic practice is rooted in extensive material research and a commitment to solid craftsmanship. Through his work, he challenges conventional tools and methodologies, using site-specific installations and temporary interventions to explore the dichotomy between the natural and the artificial. Among others, he utilizes locally sourced clay and challenges the limitations of the material by embracing its inherent cracks and imperfections, and rammed earth in a manner that accentuates its temporal and decaying nature, rather than attempting to shield it from the effects of weather conditions.

AOI YOSHIZAWA

Aoi Yoshizawa is an artist and textile designer based in Helsinki. She holds a MA from Aalto University (2015) and a BFA from the Bergen National Academy of Arts (2011). Aoi's artistic practice is motivated by the repetitive actions, mechanisms and slow processes of weaving. Currently she explores hand-weaving techniques through her experimental loom-making process. She investigates traditional weaving methods and reinterprets them into contemporary practices in her loom installations; revealing the creative process counter to industrial efficiency.

AINO MICHELSEN

Aino Michelsen is a Helsinki-born furniture designer. She graduated with an MA, in 2017, from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and after that returned to Helsinki to start her studio. In her work, she is driven to explore new materials through a variety of projects, from upholstered furniture to rattan. Scale models and model building are key parts of her design process. During a project she values the dialogue with experts from different fields, taking into close regard who she is designing for, who the manufacturer is, and what kind of collaboration evolves during the process.

VILLE AUVINEN

Ville Auvinen is a Helsinki-based designer-maker in the truest sense. He moves effortlessly between sculptural expression and industrial production. You can usually find him in the wood workshop testing new ideas and making prototypes. His designs are rooted in the rich heritage of Finnish design and craft - honoring the materials and finding clever solutions for industrial production. Through his work Ville is searching for beauty and harmony through simple expression. While working with furniture brands Ville likes to keep his hands connected to the craft by producing his own collection of furniture.

STUDIO & WORKSHOP

The artist studios are located in a industrial building at Taatisten Tila Estate. The newly renovated ceramic workshop is fully equipped with a kiln, a potter’s wheel, a slab roller and clay extruder and essential ceramic hand tools. In addition, the artists have access to a 300m2 studio space.

ACCOMODATION

The residency offers a 30-day stay in the Taattinen B&B in a private guest room with a shared bathroom. The rooms are located in the farm’s historic courtyard.

BASIC INFO

About the residency:

The residency consists of self-led work with a new project produced during the residency. The works or the work in project displays will be exhibited in the farm’s gallery space after the residency. We ask the artists in residence to run one art workshop for the local residents during their stay.

The residency offers: 24-hour access to the farm’s ceramics studio and other maker spaces, a private room with a shared bathroom and materials.
Self-funded: Travel and food.

Materials available:

Clay: The residency offers two different clay bodies. 1. Finnish wild clay from Kultela, Somero (earthenware terracotta that fires up to 1050c.) 2. Wild clay from the Taattinen Farm (earthenware terracotta that fires up to 1050c.) Glaze: Transparent.

Workshop

The workshop has a kiln, a potter’s wheel, an extruder, a slab roller, and basic hand tools for clay working. The workshop is in an industrial building where the farm's machinery was previously kept. It has been renovated and now consists of a ceramics workshop and a big open workspace that facilitates working with bigger-scale artwork.

Accommodation:

Each artist will have their own private room in the farm’s B&B. You will have a shared shower room (with washing machine) and shared toilet with the three other residency rooms. The shared kitchen for the residency is located in the studio building. The nearest grocery store is about 3km from the farm, accessible by car, bus, or bike that you can borrow from the farm. 1 km away, you can find a farm produce shop where you can buy fresh veggies, smoked salmon, strawberries, and eggs from nearby farms. Nearby cities are Naantali and Turku, with access by bus or by car.

Getting here:

If arriving from abroad, we recommend flying to Helsinki, the Finnish capital. The farm is best accessible by car. If arriving with public transport we recommed taking a bus to Turku. From Turku, there is a bus to the city of Naantali and from Naantali, a local bus to Merimasku.
